Benefits of Using a Bamboo Toothbrush

Switching from plastic to bamboo toothbrushes is a small, but important eco-friendly switch you can make. You might not think much about that small plastic toothbrush that’s sitting on your bathroom counter or the impact it has on the planet.

But did you know that every single toothbrush that has ever been produced is still on this Earth? And for something you have to replace so frequently, despite how small it is, adds up overtime.

So if you’re interested in trading in your regular plastic toothbrush for something more eco-friendly, keep reading to learn the benefits of using a bamboo toothbrush, and what you need to know before making the switch.

What you should know before using a bamboo toothbrush

A huge difference between bamboo toothbrushes and plastic toothbrushes is how they are disposed. Firstly, you need to know that bamboo toothbrushes have nylon bristles. So when you’re finished with your bamboo toothbrush you must remove the bristles using pliers or just cut the entire top off.

After that, you can take the body of the toothbrush and put it in a composting bin, or bury it in your yard to let it decompose.

But besides that, bamboo toothbrushes are just like any other manual toothbrush. They are just as hygienic and safe as regular toothbrushes, and they need to be replaced every 3-4 months as per the American Dental Associations guidelines.

What to watch out for

Watch out for unethical brands hopping on the green-washing bandwagon. If you browse through bamboo toothbrushes online, take note of where the toothbrushes are made and how they are packaged.

A lot of companies will sell unethically made bamboo toothbrushes wrapped in plastic packaging. Which is a bit ironic, isn’t it?

I prefer to get my toothbrushes from the brand The Humble Co. Designed by a dentist, these bamboo toothbrushes are a vegan, cruelty-free, and eco-friendly alternative to the everyday plastic toothbrush.

What about electric toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes are definitely a more environmentally friendly option compared to manual plastic toothbrushes. They can last for years, and unlike a manual toothbrush, you only have to buy the base and charger one time.

But a big downside is having to repurchase the bristle heads, which are plastic. And the entire toothbrush will eventually end up in a landfill too.

But bamboo toothbrushes aren’t 100% perfect either. As mentioned above, the bristles need to be removed, while the body of the toothbrush can be composted or even buried in your yard.

I think this choice is up to the buyer. Although bamboo toothbrushes, (when disposed of correctly), seem to be the more eco-friendly choice. But if you already have an electric toothbrush and don’t want to switch back to manual, then that is the 2nd best option, in my opinion.

Benefits of using a bamboo toothbrush

1. Ethically made

Bamboo toothbrushes are perfect for someone who wants a sustainable, ethical, and cruelty-free product. Of course, just make sure to buy from a good-quality brand like The Humble Co, and be on the lookout for greenwashing.

2. Sustainable

Did you know that bamboo is the fastest growing plant on Earth? And along with being able to grow up to a whopping three feet a day, this super speedy grass also releases 30x more oxygen than other plants.

It also requires less water to grow, and due to its antibacterial properties, no pesticides are needed for this plant either. Making bamboo a great sustainable option compared to other materials.

A Final Note

Switching to a bamboo toothbrush is a small, but important way to do your part in reducing plastic waste and improving the environment. Bamboo toothbrushes offer so many great benefits if you’re looking to live more consciously. So what are you waiting for? Ditch the plastic and make the switch to bamboo. You won’t regret it!
