Founded in 1908 by a French chemist, L’Oréal has skyrocketed into one of the top drugstore makeup brands around the world. But where does L’Oréal stand on their cruelty-free and vegan policies? Keep on reading to find out..
What Makes a Product Cruelty-Free?
First, let’s go over what actually makes a product cruelty-free. Unfortunately, there are no legal guidelines to what constitutes being cruelty-free. But there are some general guidelines as to what buyers look for.
- Ingredients and products not tested on animals.
- No animal testing done by company itself, suppliers, or any other third-parties.
- Not sold in Mainland China (but can be made in China).
Is L’Oréal Cruelty-Free in 2021?
L’Oréal has made great strides towards ending animal cruelty by not testing their products or ingredients on animals. They are also working directly with China to help develop alternative testing methods. But unfortunately, their products can still be tested on animals if third-party authorities demanded it.
As an example, L’Oréal sells their products in Mainland China where animal testing is required by law.
So this makes L’Oréal not cruelty-free.
Hopefully in the future, given the strides that they’ve already made, L’Oréal can one day call themselves cruelty-free. But as of 2021, this is not the case.
Is L’Oréal Vegan in 2021?
L’Oréal does have some products that are free of animal ingredients. These are marked with a “100% vegan” logo on their packaging. This has stirred up a lot of controversy although, because most people believe that if a product is vegan, it must also be cruelty-free.
But semantics aside, L’Oréal does offer products free of animal ingredients.

A Final Word on L’Oréal’s Cruelty-Free and Vegan Policies
L’Oréal has a way to go before they can be considered cruelty-free. But with their already made efforts towards ending animal testing, this very well may be in their future.
Until then, it’s best to stick with the brands mentioned above. Happy shopping!
